Protect Your RV from the Elements

If you own an RV, you understand the importance of properly caring for and maintaining it. Learn how you can protect your RV from elements such as rain, hail, wind, and sun, and increase its lifespan in the process.

Weather to Watch Out For

Unless you’re camping in the gentlest of climates, chances are high that some element of the weather poses a slow risk to your RV. Of course, a little bit of dirt isn’t going to destroy your RV in a single camping trip. However, over time, wear and tear can take a toll on your RV, decreasing its lifespan and its appearance. Keep an eye on the following weather conditions.

  • Heavy Rain
  • Hot Sun
  • Hail Damage
  • Harsh Winds
  • Excessive Dirt
  • Snow

If the forecast indicates that any of the above weather conditions are going to be particularly harsh, take extra precautions to protect your RV. Whether you’re on a trip or not, it is important to care for your camper.

How Can You Protect Your RV from the Elements?

Fortunately, you don’t have to leave your RV to the mercies of the elements. Maintain your RV by taking the following precautions.

1. Cover your RV.

If your RV sits in your driveway most of the time, a heavy-duty RV cover can prevent dirt, ice, and pests from wreaking havoc. Many RV owners keep their RVs put away for the winter season, in which case, make sure to cover your RV.

2. Invest in a protective roof.

Most RVs (but not all) have a protective roof layer made of special rubber. This material is durable and keeps the elements from wearing down on the roof, saving you money in repairs. If your RV does not already have a protective roof, look into getting a cover for the top. If you are currently researching RVs to buy, keep an eye out for one that already has a durable roof.

3. Check the weather before traveling.

Weather can be unpredictable, so checking the forecast won’t always enable you to prepare for everything. However, knowing the weather of your destination is still helpful. Make sure you pack accordingly and keep in mind the possible need for shelter.

4. Camp in sheltered areas.

If you have the option and the weather calls for it, camp in a sheltered area that protects your RV from downpours, wind, sun, or other pollutants. You won’t always have this option, but taking it when possible can help your RV stay in good condition.

5. Clean and wax your RV.

Thorough cleaning is part of proper RV maintenance. Wash your RV after every trip, clean the awnings, and inspect the mechanics. Bad weather can’t keep up with good camper care.
