All About Sunshade Awnings

Before you set out on a trip with your RV, you should make sure that you are prepared for anything and everything. Underestimating the elements can lead to damage for both your vehicle and yourself. The beating sun is perhaps the most overlooked thing when it comes to safety. Sunburn and unbearable heat can ruin a trip if you do not have a way to protect yourself from it. Bearing that in mind, here is everything you need to know about sunshade awnings.

What are the different types of awnings?

There are plenty of awning types out there. Some of them are attached to your RV, whereas others are set up on their own. When it comes to camping, RV awnings are undoubtedly the way to go. The ease of access and transportation that comes with an RV awning is unmatched by any other option.

What is the best material for a sunshade?

Awnings can be made from a whole list of materials; however, not all of them are created equally. Many differ in both quality and price, meaning that you will want to find one that suits your needs. Woven fabrics and vinyl polyester are the way to go when tackling both shade and rain. These materials are easy to clean and even easier to operate, making them a perfect addition to your RV.

What color is best for sunshade awnings?

You may have been advised to avoid wearing black clothing in the heat at one point in your life. This is because different colors respond differently to UV rays. A general rule of thumb is to wear lighter-colored clothing when outside; however, you will want your sunshade to be a darker color. Having a color such as dark blue overhead will absorb and block the heat, preventing it from reaching you. On the other hand, colors such as yellow have been proven to be less effective at heat protection.

If you are insistent on purchasing a specific color, then do not let this stop you. The difference is small enough that you are still going to get a good amount of shade, no matter the color. With that being said, if you do not have a preference as to what color your sun shade awning is, then consider buying either dark blue, gray, or red.

How long does a sunshade awning last?

If handled with care, a sunshade awning can last you anywhere from 5 – 15 years. It all depends on how often and where you are using it. To increase its lifespan, you should make it a point to clean it after every trip. This prevents things from getting trapped in the folds causing them to deteriorate over time. If your sunshade does have a hole in it, then it may be time to invest in a new one.
